Thinking of buying a used Toyota Aygo?

Why buy the Toyota Aygo?

The Toyota Aygo is a stylish compact hatchback (or city car) available in some striking colour combinations that help to give it a bold look inside and out. There’s substance to match the style because it’s good to drive, has a decent amount of space and comes with plenty of equipment. It’s likely to be very reliable and gives a notably comfortable ride for this type of car. The Aygo is an ideal runabout for single people and couples, and it’s a great choice for new or younger drivers because insurance and running costs are very low.

Toyota Aygo range and updates

The current Aygo has been sold since 2014 when it replaced a model sold from 2005. It’s a hatchback available with three or five doors. All models have a 1.0-litre petrol engine with a manual or ‘X-Shift’ automatic gearbox. The engine gives nippy acceleration around town and while motorway journeys aren’t its strong suit, it maintains higher speeds easily enough.

The Aygo range has been updated several times with new exterior and interior styling details, extra features and renamed trim levels. There are many versions to choose from, including several special editions with unique trim/colour/equipment combinations.

Toyota Aygo tech and features

The entry-level Aygo X model has DAB radio, electric front windows, LED daytime running lights and power steering. Higher-spec models have more features including smartphone connectivity, air con, parking sensors and a reversing camera. Some rarer models have sat nav, leather seats and a full-length ‘X-Wave’ fabric sunroof that opens the car to the elements – great on a sunny day.

Toyota Aygo running costs and value

Like any city car, the Aygo costs relatively little to run. According to official average figures,  petrol versions with a manual gearbox can give fuel economy of up to 56mpg (automatic models give slightly less). The Aygo is in one of the lower tax bands and all models have a low insurance group rating so it shouldn’t cost much to insure, even for a new driver.

Toyota Aygo vs rivals

Other city cars similar to the Aygo include the Citroen C1, Hyundai i10 and Volkswagen Up. The Aygo isn’t the most practical option, but it’s comfortable, cost-effective and has a very distinctive look.
