Thinking of buying a used Volkswagen Touareg?
The style of the car
The VW Touareg is a large SUV that’s luxurious and beautifully built. The Touareg’s high ride height gives it a commanding driving position, while the five-door body gives you lots of interior space and a wide-opening boot lid gives easy access to a huge load area. It’s a great family car. All versions have large alloy wheels and classy chrome trim, while the R-Line model has some sporty exterior upgrades.
How it drives
The Touareg is relaxing and easy to drive. It’s great for long journeys, thanks to a smooth ride and supportive seats. The engines are powerful and quiet. The Touareg is a big car but excellent visibility and standard parking sensors make parking an easy job. The automatic transmission takes the strain out of city driving, while four-wheel drive adds reassurance in slippery conditions. A maximum towing weight of 3500kg means the Volkswagen can tow large trailers and caravans.
The interior
The five-door, five-seat Touareg is a big car and a close match for rivals such as the BMW X5 Mercedes-Benz GLE in size. It has a very spacious interior, with enough headroom and legroom for five adults to stretch out. The huge 580-litre boot can fit three large suitcases and a baby buggy, while the back seats can be folded easily to increase capacity to a massive 1642 litres. You get lots of standard equipment with the Touareg: the entry-level SE has leather trim, climate control and sat nav with Google Street View. R-Line models have keyless entry, while the R-Line Plus and R50 add cameras that give you a bird’s eye view of the car that helps when parking.
Running costs and reliability
Overall the Touareg costs less to buy than rivals such as the Audi Q7 and BMW X5, yet it’s just as luxurious. Running costs are what you’d expect of a large SUV, with the most efficient diesel delivering an official average of 42.8mpg. Road tax costs are similar to rivals. Volkswagen has a good reputation for durability and the Touareg is likely to be a reliable choice. It’s packed with the latest safety features and has been awarded five stars by safety organisation Euro NCAP.
How it compares with similar cars
The Touareg is Volkswagen’s largest SUV. It’s much bigger than the T-Roc and Tiguan SUVs and is roughly the same size as cars such as the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Lexus RX450h.
It's actually one of our favourite large SUVs, here is a list of our top large used SUVs.
Volkswagen Touareg common questions
