The Seat Ateca is a mid-size family SUV that combines practicality and style with a sporty edge that not many of its rivals can match. It’s a great option if you need to factor in the day-to-day requirements of family life but still want something that can put a smile on your face when you’re driving.

The Seat Ateca has been on sale new since 2016 and was updated in 2020 with refreshed looks and technical upgrades. That makes it a fairly old model by modern standards, but it remains a great buy.

There are several  trims to consider. Pre-2020 models were available in S, SE, First Edition and Xcellence trims. In 2020 the lineup was revised to SE, SE Dynamic, FR, FR Sport, Xperience and Xperience Lux. Since then, the trims have been tweaked a bit, with SE Dynamic being replaced by SE Technology, and the addition of an FR Black Edition trim.

There’s also the Cupra Ateca, a high-performance version which was previously known as the Seat Ateca Cupra.

Most Atecas tend to be front-wheel-drive models, but four-wheel-drive versions are also available, badged as ‘4Drive’. Petrol and diesel engines are available, with a choice of manual or automatic gearboxes.

That means every model is equipped with the basic features – and a few more goodies besides. All models have alloy wheels. Early S cars ride on 16-inch wheels, while later models have wheels that are between 17 and 19 inches depending on the model. The S cars had a basic, monochrome touchscreen infotainment system, but other pre-2020 models have an 8-inch colour unit with Bluetooth and First Edition and Xcellence models add DAB radio.

From 2020, the infotainment was upgraded to a more powerful system with 8.25-inch or 9.2-inch screens, depending on the trim. FR Sport and Xperience Lux models also have a 10.25-inch ‘Digital Cockpit’ display in place of traditional analogue dials. All but the S models have cruise control and rear parking sensors, and post-2020 models have Apple CarPlay (often wireless) and Android Auto.

Available features on the Ateca include a BeatsAudio sound system, a rear-view camera, electric seat adjustment and a heated windscreen. FR models and the Cupra models have sportier exterior looks, with different bumper and wheel designs.

The Seat Ateca is available with a variety of petrol and diesel engines. Most are designed to be strong enough for a sporty driving experience while giving decent mpg. However, the Ateca is a sporty machine, and there are high-performance engine options too.

For the best fuel economy, go for a diesel model. It’ll give you between 39.8mpg and 58.9mpg, according to official figures. The petrol models promise between 32.5mpg and 46.3mpg.

There are no plug-in hybrid, full hybrid or electric models of the Seat Ateca. Both all-wheel-drive and front-wheel-drive models are available, though a front-wheel-drive car will give you better fuel economy.
