Used Hyundai i30 car buying guide
The style of the car
Well designed with a premium look, the Hyundai i30 is available as a hatchback, a coupe-like Fastback and a Tourer estate. There are also sportier looking N Line versions and an i30N performance hatchback.
How it drives
Promising a good drive, the i30 is comfortable with suspension that handles bumps in the road well and a range of petrol and diesel engines to suit all needs. All i30 models are compact in size making them easy to drive in town and easy to park.
The interior
The i30 is a family hatchback with a good-sized boot that can hold three medium sized suitcases or a pushchair. You can fit even more in the Tourer estate and the Fastback coupe. All models have five-doors and can seat five people, with the S versions featuring an audio system with Bluetooth connectivity and SE models including a touchscreen infotainment system. The SE Nav also comes with sat nav and rear parking sensors, while the N Line models look sporty.
If boot capacity is high on your list of requirements, this is one of our favourite used cars with big boots. Find out which are the best used cars with big boots, whatever size of car you’re considering.
Running costs and reliability
Prices for the Hyundai i30 are competitive, usually less than more premium rivals like the Volkswagen Golf. Petrol and diesel engines are fuel efficient and most models fit into relatively low insurance groups. Road tax costs are reasonable and maintenance costs are inexpensive with Hyundai providing a five-year warranty on all its cars. Hyundai has a great reputation for reliability and was ranked the third best car maker in the JD Power Dependability Study, so the i30 is unlikely to let you down. It has a five-star rating from Euro NCAP and from 2017 standard safety equipment for the i30 included automatic emergency braking and a lane departure warning alert.
How it compares with similar cars
The i30 is larger than the Hyundai i20, with more interior space and more body style options. It looks and feels more premium than the Kia Ceed and its long list of standard equipment makes it good value when compared with rivals, such as the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf. It’s also won a few awards, including a Fuel Economy accolade and a Best Hot Hatch award for the i30N.
Hyundai i30 common questions
Hyundai has a great reputation for reliability and the i30 backs this up with a five-year warranty.
Running costs are very competitive. The i30 has fuel efficient engines and annual costs, such as insurance and road tax, are affordable.
Practicality is part of the i30’s character, with lots of passenger and luggage space and numerous storage solutions. It’s compact enough to cope with daily city traffic but very capable at keeping the family comfortable on a long distance journey.
Its competitive price, great running costs and extensive standard equipment help the i30 stand out compared to rivals. The wide range of models and body styles means there are more options.
