Thinking of getting a Mercedes-Benz E-Class?
The style of the car
The E-Class is a stylish, luxurious car that’s available as a practical saloon or estate, or a sleek coupe or convertible. The whole range was updated in 2020 with new front and rear lights. AMG Line models have bigger wheels and a sportier look, while the high-performance AMG E43 and E63 have even more sporty design features. The high-tech, high-quality interior looks great, with most models featuring a pair of widescreen dashboard displays.
How it drives
The E-Class has light steering and an automatic gearbox on all models. Parking sensors and cameras are standard across the range, too, so parking is stress-free despite the car's size. Every E-Class feels reassuringly solid on the motorway and it’s so quiet and comfortable that you and your passengers will still feel fresh even after a long journey. There’s a wide choice of petrol, diesel and hybrid power available, all of which feel responsive. The more powerful models, especially the AMGs, are seriously rapid. Some models have four-wheel drive.
The interior
The E-Class is a large executive car the same size as the Audi A6 or BMW 5 Series. The interior is spacious – even the four-seat coupe and convertible have room for tall adults in the back seats. The saloon and estate have space for five adults and huge boots – indeed no estate has a bigger boot than the E-Class. Both saloon and estate are brilliant family cars that make life easier whether you’re taking the children to school or going on a two-week holiday. All models have heated leather seats, climate control, sat nav, smartphone connectivity and advanced cruise control systems.
The E-Class is actually on our list of the top 10 most comfortable used cars. What makes a car comfortable? Our guide has all the answers.
Running costs and reliability
The E-Class is available with a wide range of petrol and diesel engines, plus hybrid and plug-in-hybrid options. All give good fuel economy for this type of car; the most efficient is the E220d diesel, which can give up to 72mpg, according to official figures. Most models incur the £360 annual charge for cars up to five years old that cost more than £40,000 new, on top of road tax. Insurance costs are reasonable, though. The safety organisation Euro NCAP gave the E-Class a full five-star rating.
How it compares to similar cars
E-Class rivals include the Audi A6, Mercedes E-Class, Jaguar XF and Volvo S90. The E-Class’s style, space, safety, luxurious feel and the sheer diversity of its range make it a very strong all-rounder whatever your needs.
