Thinking of getting a Mercedes-Benz GLC?

The style of the car

The GLC is a premium compact SUV that’s available as either a standard or a coupe model. The GLC Coupe is identical in most respects but has a more tapered roofline and other small design changes. Both versions feature practical boot openings, an elevated ride height and spacious, high-quality interiors. All models have alloy wheels while the AMG-Line versions look more sporty.

How it drives

The combination of light steering, a smooth automatic gearbox and high driving position makes the GLC easy to drive despite its size. It’s quiet and relaxing on long journeys and the smooth ride adds to your comfort. Parking sensors take the strain out of town driving and all versions have four-wheel drive, making the GLC capable on slippery terrain or for towing.

The interior

The five-door, five-seat GLC is a mid-size SUV with a spacious interior and useful storage areas. There’s space for three adults in the back and legroom is good, although taller passengers might find that the Coupe’s sloping roofline reduces headroom. The boot in both versions is large and will easily hold four medium suitcases. Each version is very well equipped and even entry-level Sport models have air con, a smart infotainment system and an electrically powered tailgate. AMG Line versions add some sportier touches, while the Urban and Night Editions feature extras such as special leather trim.

Running costs and reliability

The GLC costs more to buy than non-premium brand SUVs, but it’s extremely well equipped and will hold onto its value well. Despite their power, the engines deliver good efficiency, while the plug-in hybrid model can travel up to 29 miles in pure electric mode. Tax costs are similar to premium rivals. Mercedes-Benz has a good reputation for reliability and the GLC’s safety credentials are first-rate, with systems such as autonomous emergency braking helping it to achieve a five-star Euro NCAP score.

How it compares with similar cars

The GLC’s main rivals include the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Lexus NX and Range Rover Evoque. They’re all very good cars but the sleek looks, high-tech interior and comfortable driving experience set this Mercedes apart from the crowd.
