The Mk 6 VW Golf was a welcome and refreshing replacement to the tired looking Mk 5, introducing more efficient engines and an all-round more refined package. This is one of the most popular hatchbacks on Britain’s roads and with good reason: above-par build quality and a huge selection of trim levels and power plants really set the Golf aside from the rest of its class.
The entry-level “S” model features electric front windows, Radio/CD Player and air conditioning. The “SE” Model added alloy wheels and cruise control but was only available until 2010 when the brilliant “Match” was introduced. The Match brought with it a colour touchscreen entertainment system, Multi-Device Interface for media player connectivity, automatic headlights/wipers and parking sensors. The sporty “GT” adds 17 inch alloys, sports seats and sports suspension. Our favourite is the “Match” which looks great and has a standard spec which is unheard of in most of its rivals. Available extras such as “Park assist” automatic parking mode make the Golf an excellent buy for the city driver.
Fuel economy is where the Golf really excels. There are two diesel engines a 1.6 and a 2.0. The “Bluemotion” version of the Golf uses the 1.6 TDI engine, returning an incredible 74 MPG combined and is completely free to tax. Both diesel engines are available featuring “Bluemotion technology” on the “SE”, “Match” and “GT” trims – the 2.0 returning over 65 MPG combined; which is fantastic considering no sacrifice in power (138 BHP). Petrol engines stretch from a 1.2 to the 2.0 TSI used in the GTI and are equally impressive in terms of economy: the excellent 1.4 TSI returns 45 MPG while delivering 122 BHP.
The cabin has a high-end feel to it thanks to the great quality of the materials used and everything is in the right place; whether you are 17 or 70 you’ll feel right at home. Wind noise is kept to an absolute minimum and the Golf is definitely one of the quietest hatches, delivering a more enjoyable and comfortable drive. Boot space in the Golf is great, especially aided by the shape of the opening, so loading/unloading is never an issue.
We love the Mk 6 Volkswagen Golf and it is not hard to see why it is so popular! Its simplicity and character means that no other hatch in this price range comes close to Golf’s build quality, driver satisfaction and features on offer. Now we can look forward to the Mk 7 coming through!
