Before you collect your car, Handover Managers complete all the necessary finance paperwork with you. We interviewed Malcolm who is the Handover Manager at our Southampton branch to give you some insight into what the job involves and why he loves working at Imperial.
Can you explain what a typical day looks like for you?
I arrive at work, and the first thing I do is check the boards to make sure all tasks have been completed and all vehicles are ready to be delivered. I then call customers who haven’t been confirmed for deliveries for that day and tidy up the handover department. This is how we set up for the day.
Throughout the rest of the day, customers come in in allocated timeslots to take the delivery of the vehicle they have purchased. I go through any finance documentation, warranties and any additional products that are required. I then handover the keys to the customer, show them to their vehicle and go through the basic controls of it. They then drive away with their car.
To end the day, we make sure all deliveries have been completed. If they haven’t, we call the customers to reconfirm delivery times for their vehicles.
What is your favourite thing about your job?
It has to be interacting with the customers; I love it! I love building a rapport with them. I get to meet such a variety of people. I gain the most satisfaction out of the customer leaving happy with their new vehicle.
What is it like working here?
Imperial Cars has a lovely working environment. I work with a group of Business Managers; they are likeminded and overtime, they have become very good friends of mine. There is mutual respect with my work colleagues and I and I enjoy assisting them in developing their own skillsets through training and support. It makes me happy to see the progression they make.

What qualities would you suggest someone wanting to apply for the role of Handover Manager would need?
You need self-confidence, motivation, a good work ethic, tenacity, a good sense of humour, good communication skills and the ability to build rapport with anyone. These are vital as the role involves a lot in dealing with a variety of people.
