Senior Vehicle Technician’s and Vehicle Technician’s are a key role in our business. We spoke to Mizan who is a Senior Vehicle Technician at our Southampton Service Centre about what he does in his role and what drove him to take this career path.
What does a typical day as a Senior Vehicle Technician look like for you?
When I arrive, I open up the workshop. I then check that the machinery we need is set up and working. This follows on with a whole team meeting with Frankie, our Workshop Controller, to discuss what customers are coming in on that day and what work we have left over from the previous day to complete.
Throughout the day, customers arrive and I go out with them for test drives in their car so they can raise the issues they feel they have with the car.
I also undertake MOT tests and diagnose problems such as engine management issues and chassis control issues. I then rectify the fault and test it again. I liaise with the other Technicians, our Support Advisors and also our Aftersales Manager and sometimes Sales Manager to keep them up to date of where we are in the process of fixing a car so that they can inform the customer.
At the end of day, I make sure everything is completed on the vehicles for collection.
What made you want to work as a Vehicle Technician?
I became interested in cars at a young age. It started off as a hobby when I got my licence and progressed into a career. I learnt how to maintain and service my car. My family and friends saw I was really good at it and encouraged me to study it at college. Whilst I was at college, I was working as a Trainee Mechanic. On graduating I ran my own business and realised I wanted experience working in a bigger business and here I am today.
What is your favourite thing about your job?
My favourite thing is the satisfaction I get when completing a job from start to finish and seeing how happy the customers are with their car.
What is the company culture like here?
It is fun working here. The team are awesome, we have strong teamwork, everyone works hard but we also have fun. Everyone brings something to the team.
What do you think is the biggest benefit of working at Imperial?
For me, I love the variety of vehicles we get to work on – it keeps my interest and motivates me because I am always growing.
The pay is also competitive compared to main dealers and overtime is good pay.
What skills and qualities do you think are important for someone who wants to be a Vehicle Technician?
They need to have a methodical approach, and be a problem solver. They need to be open minded, be a team player, have a good sense of humour, good communication skills as we are dealing with customers a lot, and cannot be afraid of getting their hands dirty.
