#ThrowbackThursday E63 BMW 6 Series

When the E63/E64 BMW 6 Series was introduced in 2003, BMW were keen to take the market by storm with its sleek, unusual looks and un-matched luxury. The 6 series name had not been seen since 1989 when the E24 ceased production, so when the E63 came on sale it was an instant hit! Initially there were only petrol options, a 3.0L straight-six and V8s engines in two guises: a 4.4 645i with 328bhp and the 4.8 650i boasting 361bhp. Pretty clear to see that the 6 series was targeting thrill seekers with a penchant for luxurious speed from the get go! The E63 6 series remains a head turner even 6 years after its production stopped, resulting in a great used buy.

A minor facelift was launched in 2007 but one of the most significant changes was the introduction of a diesel engine in the all-petrol line up. The 635d arrived as the world’s first diesel GT 2+2; not as a way to damper performance – quite the contrary, as it delivered 427lb ft of torque which was 10% more than the V10 M6! The 3.0L twin-turbo diesel engine had already been let loose on the market in the 3 and 5 Series, but it really came into its own in the true Sports Coupe that is the 6 Series. Sales of the 635d boomed from the start and it remains a popular choice with consumers who want performance but still a reasonable fuel bill, who can argue with that?
